The Labor of Love in Community Care
In every corner of our society, women—especially Black, Indigenous, and immigrant women—are the backbone of families, communities, and movements. Their labor, often unpaid and undervalued, is the quiet force that keeps the world moving. Whether through caregiving, grassroots organizing, or everyday acts of resistance, these women shape the fabric of our communities with love, intention, and an unwavering commitment to justice. Yet, despite the essential nature of their work, it remains invisible in economic structures that fail to recognize care as labor and in political spaces that neglect its profound impact.
At Love Before ALL, we believe that love is a practice, a choice, and a radical tool for transformation. The labor of love that women carry—raising children, supporting elders, nurturing communities, and sustaining movements—is an act of justice and a testament to the power of belonging. This work should not be seen as charity, but as the foundation upon which thriving, self-sustaining communities are built. However, for this labor to be truly valued, it must be supported, resourced, and compensated in ways that acknowledge its true worth.
As we navigate a time when federal institutions are being dismantled and social safety nets are increasingly under attack, it is crucial to remember that change does not only happen at the top. While we push for structural transformation, we must also lean into the power of local organizing, mutual aid, and community-led solutions. It is here, in the intersections of nonprofit, for-profit, and philanthropy, that we can work collectively to build sustainable pathways for those who have long been excluded from traditional economies.
Vickie Harris, a friend of Love Before ALL, reminds us that the government has a responsibility to seed community work that promotes social enterprises. By investing in models that allow communities to become self-sustaining, we move beyond temporary solutions and toward systems that truly uplift and empower. This means supporting policies that fund caregivers, protecting workers' rights, and creating economic opportunities that honor the labor of those who have historically been underpaid or entirely unpaid. It also means demanding that for-profit institutions take accountability for their role in perpetuating oppressive systems and commit to ethical business practices that reinvest in the communities they profit from.
Strategic, people-centered approaches to justice require us to reimagine how we define work, success, and sustainability. If we believe in a world where love is the guiding principle, then we must actively build economic and political systems that reflect this belief. We must advocate for childcare as a right, not a privilege. We must recognize grassroots organizing as essential labor, not volunteer work. And we must fight for policies that support those who have given so much of themselves in service of others.
